Hybrid Rickshaws: A Zero-Carbon Transport Revolution for India

Recently, India’s Prime Minister urged citizens to adopt public transport and reduce fuel dependency amid concerns over crude oil supply disruptions caused by tensions in the Gulf region. Inspired by this national call, the Sports & Management Research Institute (SMRI), a premier sports research, training and consultancy organisation, proposes a transformative solution for India’s short-distance mobility needs: the introduction of modern hybrid cycle rickshaws.

Reinventing the Indian Rickshaw

Cycle rickshaws are still part of daily life in many Indian cities. However, most existing rickshaws are outdated, heavy, uncomfortable and visually unappealing. The riders are often elderly, physically exhausted and economically vulnerable.

In contrast, modern “Pedicabs” used in the USA and Europe are lightweight, aerodynamic, hybrid-powered and aesthetically designed. These vehicles combine human power with electric assistance, creating an efficient and eco-friendly transportation model. Operated mostly by energetic and well-groomed youngsters, pedicabs are popular in tourist zones and urban leisure spaces as zero-carbon mobility solutions.

India can adapt and localise this successful model.

Why Hybrid Cycle Rickshaws Matter

Introducing next-generation hybrid cycle rickshaws in India can create multiple social, economic and environmental benefits:

  • Reduce dependence on fossil fuels and imported crude oil
  • Provide a zero-carbon transport option for short-distance travel
  • Improve mobility in narrow streets and congested urban areas
  • Enhance the dignity, income and quality of life of existing rickshaw workers
  • Create employment opportunities for youth
  • Encourage healthier lifestyles through human-powered mobility
  • Offer affordable transport for families and local commuters
  • Reduce urban pollution and traffic congestion
  • Hybrid cycle rickshaws can become an ideal alternative to fuel-dependent autorickshaws for short urban trips.

TRANSPORTS

Rickshaws for Transport and Sports

Inspired by the iconic rickshaw racing scene from the Tamil movie Rickshawkaran starring M. G. Ramachandran, SMRI once organised a unique rickshaw race in Tiruchirappalli for local rickshaw pullers.

For many participants, it was the first time they pedalled a rickshaw not for survival, but for fun, pride and competition.

This experience inspired a larger vision:

Rickshaw Racing as a Sport

Just as motorsports such as Formula One World Championship and NASCAR drive innovation in the automobile industry, Rickshaw Racing can become a catalyst for improving the performance, safety and design of cycle rickshaws.

Rickshaw/Pedicab Racing can:

  • Become a recreational and fitness activity
  • Attract tourists and spectators
  • Create a new indigenous sporting culture
  • Encourage continuous innovation in vehicle design
  • Promote sustainable transportation awareness
  • Build community engagement and local entrepreneurship

A Call for Collaboration

SMRI invites:

  • Engineers and industrial designers
  • Automobile and cycle manufacturers
  • Startups and innovators
  • Sports promoters
  • Tourism departments
  • Urban planners and policymakers
  • CSR initiatives and investors

to collaborate in designing and developing economical, lightweight, safe and beautiful hybrid cycle rickshaws for India.

India has the opportunity to transform an old transport system into a modern symbol of sustainability, employment, health and innovation.
