October 2 to October 8
Heaven Makers Week (Observed from October 2 to October 8) is a dedicated campaign to honour, celebrate, and empower housekeeping staff, sanitation workers, municipal cleaners, and grassroots environmental volunteers—the true “Heaven Makers” who quietly transform our offices, streets, neighbourhoods, and public spaces into clean, livable environments.
Timing this week to kick off on October 2 (Gandhi Jayanti and the anniversary of the Swachh Bharat Mission) bridges the vision of national cleanliness with deep social appreciation for the human labour behind it.
Core Objectives of Heaven Makers Week
- Appreciation: Appreciate the contributions of people who make our surroundings clean and beautiful
- Performance Management: Work to ensure their safety and well-being by using sports science and sports engineering advancements
- Dignity and Social Recognition: Shift public perception to view sanitation work as essential and noble, dismantling historical social stigmas and ensuring workers receive the respect equivalent to any frontline public service.
- Health, Safety, and Rights: Advocate for zero tolerance toward hazardous manual scavenging, mandate the complete shift to mechanised cleaning technologies, and ensure universal access to proper safety gear (PPE).
- Community Engagement: Involve citizens directly in cleanliness drives, teaching community accountability so that maintaining clean surroundings is a shared responsibility rather than a burden left to a few.
Heaven Makers Week Celebrations
The Janitor Who Helped Put a Man on the Moon
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy visited NASA for the first time. During his tour of the facility, he met a janitor who was carrying a broom down the hallway. The President then casually asked the janitor what he did for NASA, and the janitor replied, “I’m helping put a man on the moon.”
Take a moment, and reflect on this idea. The janitor knew something that most of us struggle with, the purpose of his work. He kept the building clean so that the scientists, engineers, and astronauts could focus on their mission of putting “man on the moon”. They did not have to worry about spending their time on trashcans, bathrooms, or hallways. He did that for them. He saw where his contribution fit in the organization. He connected his purpose with theirs.
