Sports Injury Awareness Month

Sports Injury Awareness Month

A recent report in the Times of India newspaper highlights the increase in sports injuries in Indian children. One recent study found that out of 7,230 young athletes, 3.40% got injured over a year. Another study found that 73.4% of college athletes got hurt. The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that over 2.6 million 0-19-year-old children are treated annually in emergency departments for sports and recreation-related injuries. Many promising sports stars of tomorrow leave sports forever every day due to sports injuries.

Moreover, Indian athletes retire early due to sports injuries compared to their counterparts in Europe and the USA.

Sports & Management Research Institute (SMRI) is observing February as SPORTS SAFETY AWARENESS MONTH and February 20 as SPORTS SAFETY DAY to create awareness among athletes and parents on sports injury prevention, treatment and rehabilitation. On February 20, 1998, the former Indian cricketer Raman Lamba was hit by a cricket ball on his temple while fielding in the Bangladesh league cricket. Lamba died on 23-02-1998.

The key focus topics of SPORTS SAFETY AWARENESS MONTH OF 2025 are

  1. Role of Sports Engineering and Sports Science in the Prevention of Sports Injuries
  2. Rehabilitation of injured athletes
